Lambrusco Viadanese

Also known as Grappello Ruberti, Lambrusco di Viadana.

The Lombard member of the Lambrusco family — a genuinely distinct MASAF-registered variety (scheda 121, admitted to the Registro Nazionale delle Varietà di Vite 25.05.1970, G.U. 149 del 17.06.1970), named for the comune of Viadana in the southern Mantovano where it's most concentrated, on the lower plains bordering Emilia's own Reggiano/Cremonese growing areas. Medium, compact cylindrical clusters carry medium, blue-black, thick-skinned berries. Its official MASAF synonym "Grappello Ruberti" honors Ugo Ruberti, the agronomist credited with selecting and propagating the variety in the Quistello area (province of Mantova) in the late 19th/early 20th century — confirmed via MASAF's own registry entry rather than assumed from the shared name.

The dominant base grape of Lombardia's own Lambrusco Mantovano DOC and its twin Provincia di Mantova / Sabbioneta IGT, one of four varieties (with Lambrusco Maestri, Lambrusco Marani, and Lambrusco Salamino) required to make up a minimum 85% of the blend, together with Ancellotta/Fortana/Lambrusco di Sorbara/Lambrusco Grasparossa allowed up to 15%. Quistello IGT's own disciplinare (Art. 8) names the local synonym "Grappello Ruberti" directly, honoring the same Ruberti connection — corrected here to the canonical registered name "Lambrusco Viadanese" (per this rollout's canonical-name pitfall, same treatment as Malvasia del Chianti → Malvasia Bianca Lunga), rather than creating a duplicate grape-mesh node.
