Groppello

A light, soft red generally associated with Lake Garda's Riviera del Garda in Lombardy.

AMBIGUITY NOTE: Val di Magra's own disciplinare (Lunigiana, northwestern Tuscany) also lists a grape it names simply "Groppello" among its obligatory red varieties, but the disciplinare's own Art. 8.A text explicitly flags this as unresolved: MASAF's national register of complementary varieties lists TWO distinct grapes under this name ("Groppello di Santo Stefano N." and "Groppello Gentile N."), both cited in the disciplinare's historical prose as varieties once typical of the Massa Carrara area of Lunigiana. The disciplinare cannot determine from its own text which of the two is meant, and deliberately leaves the name undisambiguated rather than guessing — the same treatment given to the analogous Neretto case in Piemonte. Neither Lunigiana variety is confirmed to be identical to the Riviera del Garda Groppello described above; this profile does not assert that identity.
