Groppello Gentile
One of three genuinely distinct MASAF-registered Groppello biotypes native to Lake Garda's Valtènesi hills — Riviera del Garda Classico DOC's own Allegato 2 (list of suitable varieties) confirms it has no single generic "Groppello" entry, only three separately registered varieties: "Groppello Gentile N.," "Groppello di Mocasina N.," and "Groppello di S. Stefano N." — not synonymous biotypes of one grape, the same treatment already established in this dataset for Schiava Gentile/Grigia/Grossa and the three Malvasia subtypes. Of the three, Groppello Gentile is generally considered the most refined: softer, medium acidity, bright ruby color, good body, with a characteristic spicy note that distinguishes it from the more intensely colored, fuller-bodied Groppello di Mocasina.
The primary named component of Riviera del Garda Classico's varietal "Groppello" typology (minimum 85%, together with Groppello di Mocasina and Groppello di Santo Stefano) and of the DOC's red/rosso superiore/chiaretto/Valtènesi base blend (minimum 30% combined with the same two biotypes), alongside Marzemino/Barbera/Sangiovese. Also named individually among the 23 varieties eligible for varietal specification in the neighboring Provincia di Mantova and Sabbioneta IGT.
