Groppello di Mocasina

Red grapeLombardia, Italy (Mocasina, a hamlet of Calvagese della Riviera, Valtènesi, province of Brescia)
← Grapes

One of three genuinely distinct MASAF-registered Groppello biotypes native to Lake Garda's Valtènesi hills, named for Mocasina, a hamlet of Calvagese della Riviera considered the historic heartland of Groppello cultivation. Riviera del Garda Classico DOC's own Allegato 2 (list of suitable varieties) confirms it as its own separately registered entry ("Groppello di Mocasina N."), not a biotype/synonym of a single generic "Groppello" — the same treatment already established in this dataset for Schiava Gentile/Grigia/Grossa and the three Malvasia subtypes. Of the three Groppello biotypes, it's generally considered the most intensely colored and full-bodied, giving the deepest, most structured wines of the family, in contrast to Groppello Gentile's softer, spicier style.

One of three named components (with Groppello Gentile and Groppello di Santo Stefano) of Riviera del Garda Classico's varietal "Groppello" typology (minimum 85% combined) and of the DOC's red/rosso superiore/chiaretto/Valtènesi base blend (minimum 30% combined), alongside Marzemino/Barbera/Sangiovese.
