Grechetto di Todi

Also known as Pignoletto, Grechetto gentile.

Grechetto di Todi is one of the two distinct Umbrian white grapes that share the Grechetto name, associated in particular with the area around Todi in the province of Perugia. Genetic study has shown it to be identical to Pignoletto, the grape of the Colli Bolognesi in Emilia-Romagna, and it is distinct from Grechetto di Orvieto (Greghetto), the other grape long called simply Grechetto in Umbria. It is sometimes referred to as Grechetto gentile.

The variety gives fuller-bodied, structured whites with moderate acidity, and is valued for lending body and a nutty, floral character to Umbrian blends as well as varietal wines. Typical flavors include white flowers, pear, citrus, and a nutty note. It is a key white grape across the Orvieto, Todi, and wider central-Umbrian denominations, where it is grown both on its own and blended with Trebbiano and other local whites.
