Girò
Also known as Giro.
Girò is a rare native red grape of southern Sardinia, historically grown around Cagliari, where it is the base of the Girò di Cagliari DOC. Long associated with sweet dessert wines, it declined sharply through the twentieth century and survives in small quantities.
It is best known for sweet and fortified (liquoroso) reds of ripe red fruit, dried fig and warm spice, though dry versions exist; the grape accumulates sugar readily, suiting it to the traditional dessert style.
