Gaglioppo

Gaglioppo is a red Italian wine grape grown almost exclusively in Calabria, in the far south, where it is the leading dark variety. DNA studies have shown it to be a natural crossing of Sangiovese and the white Calabrian grape Mantonico Bianco. It is the grape behind Cirò, historically one of the oldest named wines of Italy.

It typically gives pale, savory reds that can take on a red-orange hue from its unstable anthocyanins, with rough tannins and high acidity. Aromas run to red berries, citrus zest, minerals, and underbrush. Its home is Cirò and the other DOCs of Calabria; in the Marche it appears only as one of the permitted monovarietal specifications of the regional Marche IGT.
