Foglia Tonda

A minor Tuscan native red grape named for its rounded ('tonda'), trilobate leaf shape. Nearly disappeared from cultivation before a recent revival by growers rediscovering old native varieties across the Chianti/Valdarno hills and Maremma. Produces a ruby-red wine with bluish reflections, fruity and floral aromas, good structure and freshness, and soft but present tannin.

A notably productive vine that needs careful yield control to reach full ripeness. Only recently formalized in Valdarno di Sopra's disciplinare — added as a recognized monovarietal typology by the ordinary modification of DM 26.06.2024 (not present in the 2011/2014 text), and used as a complementary variety (up to 10%) in Orcia's Sangiovese typology.
