Also known as Grenache, Garnacha, Cannonau.

Alicante N. is Italy's officially registered name for what is, genetically, the same grape as Grenache/Garnacha — molecular studies show Alicante, Tocai Rosso, and Sardinia's Cannonau are all biotypes of the same variety. Maremma Toscana's disciplinare permits labeling the wine "Grenache" as an on-label synonym for grapes declared as Alicante (Art. 7.5). Not to be confused with Alicante Bouschet, a separate, distinct teinturier (red-fleshed) variety bred in France and registered separately in Italy's national vine register.

Cultivated on roughly 100 hectares around Magliano, Roccastrada, Pitigliano, and Manciano in the Maremma. Produces a medium-late-ripening, medium-vigor vine suited to hilly, clay, skeleton-rich soils.
